Our Story

Nearly Five Decades
In the Making

The Book Market has been part of the Crest Hill and Joliet community longer than most of its customers have been alive. Here's how we got here.

The Doors Open

The Book Market opened in Joliet at Jefferson & Reed Street β€” a modest storefront with big ambitions. From day one, the mission is simple: put great books into the hands of everyday readers at prices anyone can afford.

First Big Move

After 30 years The Book Market relocated to 2368 Plainfield Road in Crest Hill and doubled its store size due to closing of the West Side Shopping Center

Second Relocation to Our Permanent Home

More space; more books. What started as a modest storefront has become a fixture of the Crest Hill community, with thousands of loyal customers who've made it part of their routine. The Book Market made its second and final relocation right across the street to 2365 Plainfield Road! This move doubled our space again and serves as our home today and will continue to be our space forever!

A Nextdoor Neighborhood Favorite

The Book Market earns Nextdoor's Neighborhood Favorite distinction β€” voted by the very neighbors it has served for decades. Recognition across nine neighborhoods in the greater Joliet and Chicagoland area, a testament to over 45 years of community trust.

Still Here. Still Growing.

Nearly five decades after opening day, The Book Market remains independently owned and operated β€” by the original owner. We may have moved locally over the years but we maintained the same commitment. New titles arrive daily, new readers discover us for the first time, and longtime customers keep coming back. The story isn't finished yet.

"I wish we found this place sooner! If you're looking for a very corporate type of bookstore like Barnes & Noble, don't go here. If you're looking to go hunting for used books like you're going thrifting for buried treasure, this is the place. I have been to many bookstores and this place was selling old books that I haven't seen elsewhere. Everything was 40% the cover price, I believe. It is not very organized inside, but it really is more like a thrift store for books. Keep that in mind and you'll find something very cool here."

"This is a huge used book market larger than many public libraries with a huge selection of catagories. Additionally if you want to make your pile of books into a smaller pile of books they have a fantastic trade in policy. If you love books, make the trip - a diamond in the rough! ❀️2"

"THE BOOK MARKET: Huge used bookstore doubled their size when they moved across the street in 2023 or so and family owned. πŸ“˜ Very well organized aisle after aisle, genre after genre but far too many book titles/authors to be alphabetized one by one, on each shelf, like large national chain bookstores with large retail staff. πŸ“š Readers bring in more used books daily which are then resold as used. There’s always new used books coming in! 🏑 Owned & staffed by a family who’s dedicated to the local & regional reading community. πŸ“– Pay attention to Open hours."
